Between Sound and Silence collaboration between SCO and HCC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HUTCHINSON, KS (March 2, 2026) Salt City Orchestra - Hutch Community College

Come out and enjoy ‘Between Sound and Silence’ on March 9, 2026, beginning at 7:00 pm. (Doors open at 6:30 pm)  The HutchCC Symphonic Band, directed by Eric Stambaugh, and the HutchCC Concert Choir, directed by Judson Lee, in collaboration with the Salt City Orchestra, will present a special concert welcoming the arrival of spring.  This performance celebrates the beginning of a new season with uplifting music and a spirit of renewal.

The HutchCC Concert Choir, directed by Judson Lee, will perform “Illuminare” by Elaine Hagenberg in collaboration with the Salt City Orchestra. Illuminare is Hagenberg's first extended work, consisting of five movements for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. Using lesser-known sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, the piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace.

Salt City Orchestra board president Dan Spears connected with the HutchCC Fine Arts department while inquiring about renting their performance hall for SCO performances. Shortly after that conversation, Mr. Lee reached out to SCO and invited the orchestra to collaborate on this production by providing the string section. Spears stated: “It is a joy to showcase our musicians as we prepare for our inaugural full concert in June at the Dillon Nature Center”. Spears stated the board is focused on identifying their music director and filling out the roster.

Judson Lee serves as the Director of Choral Activities at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. A native of Iowa, he has been working with choirs and students of varying backgrounds and ages for ten years.
